TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. So I've been reading the list, and it seems there is a sub-thread about the
purpose of this survey. Some think it's subversive marketing, and some think
it's an honest student survey.
Well, the facts were questioned, so why not take a look at them.
1. Survey submitted to several technical writing/help authoring lists (it
hit HATT but we didn't allow it, as it looked like spam).
2. Survey contained heavy marketing.
3. From resume, person who posted is *graduating next month* with a MBA (and
given the projected GPA it is doubtful that such a survey released this late
into the semester was accidental).
4. From resume, person currently is employed by One Light Corporation, doing
market research. Granted the company's bread and butter seems to be resting
on a "net nanny" type of software called Bounce, but it could be working in
new tools, and given Bounce is shareware, the person might be one of a few
employees. Said person is also highly adept at programming, per resume, so
it may even be a sole proprietorship with successful resume spin added to
meet its objective.
Now, I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt, but it seems David
and Goober have valid points.
