Can you get the Word file and work with that? I'd think the time to index is
BEFORE you export to Quark. The art/production person will have to redo his
work, but too bad - they should have thought of that beforehand.

Or just rebuild the finished manual in Word and show them that the "export
to Quark" step isn't even necessary. I did that on one job a long time
ago... they were exporting from Word to PageMaker, and they didn't believe
Word could produce the same finished work. So I did it in Word, and saved
them a lot of time and money. That was years ago though. I haven't seen
anyone use the Word-to-DTP process for a long time now.
