Globalization is good. It can help leverage the strengths and overcome
the weaknesses of different regions and provide diverse goods and
opportunities to large numbers of people.
What I have a problem with is exploitation, regardless of who is
exploited where. What we are seeing with offshoring of labor, in the
textile, tech, and many other industries, is exploitation, not
globalization. Have any of you seen US companies "offshoring" any
executive positions? Now, don't tell me that among all those brilliant
folks in other countries that have lower living costs and standards,
they couldn't find a CFO that would work for a fraction of the salary
that most CFOs in the US earn. ;-) Offshoring is being driven strictly
by economics---exploit the worker bees to preserve the honey for the
executives... I also think the trend could be changed, or at least
radically influenced, through policy and incentives. But it probably
won't be as long as our country is being run by wealthy
business-oriented individuals.
