Im reading many hypothetical arguments for and against
licensing Technical Writing. Ive decided to approach
this in a less hypothetical manner of argument.
Technical communication is a broad field, encompassing
anything from designing simple flyers to writing
comprehensive instructions manuals about a <insert
complicated article here>. Because it is such a broad
field it has the capacity for people within it to be
over and underqualified to fill something that would
be designated a technical writing position.
To introduce a licensing system into it would lead to
a differentiation of what the neccesary qualifications
of a technical writer would need to be for them to
fill a position. A company looking for someone to
write flyers could hire someone as their writer(AKA
not a technical communicator). A company looking for
someone to document a <insert complicated article
here> would be looking for a technical writer.
I think its a step in the right direction, it would
differentiate the proffesionals from those of
different circumstances. As have presented it, this
idea is somewhat under-engineered. It messes with the
law of supply and demand a little. But for the overall
proffesion I think it is a must.
