The Master Document feature fails, because 32-bit processors can't manage
enough handles, and because none of us have enough memory to keep all those
documents open. It may work with a 64-bit 2-processor or larger machine,
which we will all have in a few years.
As for OLE and its children, it was intended, like multimedia applications,
to drive us towards bigger and faster machines. Processors have been
commoditized, because we have no more applications that we want that need
those bigger and faster machines.
We will be inventing applications that will drive those needs, but it will
be a while. Just getting memory management instructions out of the code will
make all our applications run faster.
One day Master Document will work. MS Word will be a service soon, so we
will be using servers to open all those documents. That shouldn't be a
problem should it?
