re Punctuation

Funny.  I've been assuming that the lack of any pause
before the name is the reason for skipping the comma.

When we start a letter with "Hello Bruce," we're thinking
of it as equivalent to "Dear Bruce"-- not something you
linger over, but just the click of an "on" button as your
message starts.  "Hello, Bruce" looks more like something
that is said for its own sake.
