As much of a PIA as activation may be (maybe I've just been lucky), IMO, it
takes a back seat to validation. It took me 3 weeks to get a usable
validation code from Quark for a v6 upgrade because I bought it from a
reseller rather than directly from Quark. Fortunately, the activation
process (also required) went smooth as silk.

I've always hated validation codes. It's just one more number that you have
to have securely stored somewhere. Isn't it enough trouble keeping track of
the serial number? In the (not so) old days, before the demise of floppy
drives, there would be validation disks which were really a pain. If they
didn't get lost, they would often get damaged and rendered unreadable. In a
workgroup you always had to keep track of which validation diskette belonged
to which workstation. Yow!!

I've often though that if Quark put the extra effort into application
development that they put into attempting to prevent piracy they'd have a
better and more successful product. With Adobe's ID 2.0 eating away at
Quark's market share, maybe this would be a good time to rethink that
policy.
