Sorry, John..but half way through that explanation, my eyes had glazed over
and I'd forgotten what the question was.

I think they should have cut the portion a little smaller. if you need an
explanation that long to compose an email, there must be something wrong.

I don't know if the help is better...I do know that I don't need a help
explanation to compose a message.

OK, I'll take the Pepsi Challenge.

Is it a fact, or is it an unfounded supposition, that Linux is worse than
Windows or Mac for documentation? I'm typing this message in KDE, a GUI
front end to Linux. I'm using a built-in mail client called KMail. So let's
say I need help on mail composition parameters for the application.

Up comes the help in a familiar-looking browser with left-hand navigation &
toolbar. And here's what it says about settings (formatting deleted):

Automatically append signature lets you toggle whether to automatically
include your signature as defined in the identity page [link].
Use smart quoting will break long lines but will try to keep the correct
quoting (e.g. the '> ' will always be at the start
