Were these honest questions or smalltalk? It sounds
like someone trying to make smalltalk at the wrong
time. I'd take the client if you need the client, and
confront the situation should it arise again.
Otherwise, say "Ya know, I don't think I'll be able to
do this right now" and be on your way.
