The entire implementation of Track Changes in Word 2002 is a waste of time
and effort. All those balloons and multicolored text and the change bars
make for a very, very crowded--practically unreadable--screen.
Merging all those comments from various readers can be a nightmare, too.
And, Word holds onto everything--graphics as well as text--that has been put
into or edited out of a file. Don't believe it? Just change 'Show' from
'Final' to 'Final Showing Markup' or (better still) 'Original Showing
Markup' after a document has been reviewed by more than three individuals.
The worst of it is, you cannot turn Track Changes off. You can make Word
appear to have it off by not 'showing' the changes, and you can turn off the
blasted balloons, but you cannot turn off the overall function.
Oops! I meant, "feature."
You can copy all of the file into a new Word document; you may be able to
rid your file of the appended garbage by selecting File|New and then
choosing the original (edited) file from the "New from existing Document"
option in the resulting New Document pane. You cannot, however, turn the
darn function/feature OFF.
Give me a document with red lines from a pen any day.
