TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
There are a number of areas still untapped. My major interest is in
knowledge management; using existing organizational information more
efficiently. For something as simple and basic as creating cross-referenced
data regarding customer/sales personnel interactions (for future use by
others in the organization), the amount of initial effort required is
substantial. At some point, someone (not an app or database) has to make a
value judgment about every scrap of information, decide if it is worth
saving, how it should be saved, how long it should be saved, and how it
should be retrieved.
My point is that technical writers (or prospective technical writers) should
look beyond the weak job market and realize they have a lot to offer
employers--who at this moment may not fully realize what they need. As web
services become more widely used, and organizations realize that to stay
competitive they need to adopt knowledge management techniques or go the way
of dinosaurs, the opportunities for technical writers will be greater than
ever before.
What are the chances web services will be "just another fad"? About as high
as computers being regarded as "just another gadget."
