Does anyone know how an in-memory database differs from a regular database.
From the name it sounds like the whole database is retained in memory but is
this possible?

Yes it is. Holding the database entirely in RAM makes all operations potentially very fast. The downside is, of course, that the size of a database is limited by the available RAM. Whether the trade-off is worth it needs to be evaluated in each case; usually it isn't, which is why in-memory databases occupy only a niche of the database market.
