RE: Work-for-hire question?

At one former company, we got around this issue by including the following
in the footer of each page: "Licensed Material, Property of Copyright
Holder." Of course, the official copyright was always on the Title/Notice
page.

For the online world, I seem to remember that for software (and by extension
for online documentation), there was a requirement that the copyright notice
be embedded in the code, just in case someone went looking for it. That may
have changed -- it was eons ago that I last checked this -- but it was some
measure of legal protection.

And, as Geoff says, the copyright is yours/your company's unless/until
you/they transfer all or specific rights to some other entity. (Is that
enough slashes for pseudo-legalese?)
