Well, it's my plan whenever the design of a site is under
my control. Except that my PDF link is usually titled
something like "download this entire document in PDF
format," and appears on every page of a multipage HTML
version of the doc in question. The user has the choice
of clicking through the doc page by page/link by link or
downloading the whole thing in one gulp to keep and/or
read locally. I don't use language what might even
suggest that it would be a good idea to read the PDF
online. If I'm converting a print-format doc to HTML
for someone, I want their site to record lots of hits
on its pages...

In other words, you want an HTML version for online Help, and you want the "printer friendly" button to open a PDF version. Sounds like a plan to me.
