TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.

Oh, right. Having the opportunity is a wonderful
thing, provided you *do* have a solid game plan and
have buy-in.
But, as far as the platform goes, don't wait for it to
be given to you. Build it yourself whenever you can. I
do, and the benefits are wonderful. You build it
small... get an idea, plan it out, talk with the
direct parties about collaboration (works well if
everyone has a personal gain to reap), then become
ring-leader, and formally propose it to the powers
that be.
It works. Granted, in some environments it may fail,
as some environments will continue to foster building
working holiday weekends into a project plan and
include an HR department without career development
paths for hired positions.
