The BNC is simply a very large collection of British English
texts, marked up electronically (SGML) to make it useful
for computational analysis; computational linguists can
test algorithms against it for example, or you can use
it to train your nueral net (or whatever the latest AI
research activity is, I'm 10yrs out of date I guess).
I would think there are _all sorts_ of a priori issues
with using such a corpus to justify psycho-social
mumbo jumbo, but that won't stop 'em trying. :-)
