Wanna talk about font choices for tech comm? Arial and/or Times New Roman. That's all you need to know about font selection.

I respectfully disagree. Some of the documentation we create is destined for end users of our customers' products. The fonts used in these manuals have to fit the overall image of the company.

As I said before, I normally expect the CI to determine the fonts we have to use, but this is not always the case. For example, you need to have some feeling for when the fonts from the CI are NOT suitable and you need to replace them with something more appropriate - perhaps even Times and Helvetica ;-)

There is no hard dividing line between technical documentation and marcomm, and when your work takes you close to the border, it is useful to have some knowledge of fonts. However, many tech writers may rarely if ever need such knowledge, particularly if they are working in large companies with dedicated design persons or departments.
