Chris,

The general rule of thumb (movie credits, billboards, ...) is that if you give people one second per word, even fairly slow readers will do okay.

However, first the person has to realize there is a message there to read. And you say your messages show up at the bottom of the screen (in a status bar-type display???). So people are going to take a while to get there.

Is there any way you can get your software developers to display the message front and center, in a solid-background box, with fairly large letters. I don't think you have to go Hollywood with flashing red messages, but just get it up where people will notice it right away. Then two seconds would be plenty. Where you've got it now, I think your plan to test a couple of different durations sounds like the best way to go.
