We do our own indexing. Each writer is responsible for indexing any new content added to a manual for any given release.

We use embedded index tags, and the Index is created on-the-fly by our stylesheets when we publish.

We rarely write new manuals entirely from scratch, so it's important that when we modify a manual the index tags move with the text.

I'd be curious why your indexers don't want to use embedded tags.
