I know the newest version of Yahoo IM has an option to do this
automatically. I doubt that helps if you're stuck with AOL's IM, though.

There's another IM tool I've heard of -- Trillian, available at
www.trillian.cc -- that connects to AOL's IM (among others) and will
automatically log your conversations. You might try that.
