Generally, speaking to someone in their native language is well-received. I'm in a situation where I get to learn words/phrases from other languages both at work and at home.

At the office, many of my coworkers are European or Asian. Resultantly, I've learned some German, Hungarian, Hindi, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Not much, but enough to break the ice when I started working with these folks.

At home, I've learned some Khmer (Cambodian), Vietnamese, and Chao Cho (a lesser-known Chinese dialect). Even better is that one of my coworkers also speaks Chao Cho. :)

In every case, having made the effort to learn a phrase or two has been worth it. For example, when my girlfriend introduces me to a Cambodian friend, they're always surprised and pleased when I ask them "sok sa bai te? (how are you doing?)"

My question...has anyone ever made the effort to learn even a rudimentary
level of language used by your peers and if so, what was the effect on them
toward you?
