I think I know why...because the teacher couldn't come up with an example of
where calculus would be used, at least not one that he student would think
"Yeah, I can see that...cool!".

Our world is constantly changing. Algebra assumes that "x" is always a given number. Calculus helps us to keep track of "x" as it changes due to time, energy, and other factors.

Mathematics is the study of patterns. These patterns occur in nature; math allows us to descibe these patterns and predict future behavior based on these patterns.

Mathematics is the science of making the "unseen" visible. For example, everyone knows that an object weighing many tons cannot float; yet mathematics describes how it is possible for airplanes to fly. Why does a large building stand? Why does an apple fall to the ground? Why are my eyes brown? Calculus lets us explore and answer these questions.
