No, Connie. You're not wrong. In fact you're doing exactly what most tech writers wish they were doing only haven't figured out how to insert themselves into the process properly to do it.

John Garison (who has been too buried for the last several months to contribute to techwr-l) has described a methodology similar to yours (check the archives).

What you are doing is the gold standard. Really.
