Nathan,
what is your skill set??? You can still find a job with out having the 6-
10 year experience. Possibly and internship. There will always need to be
effective documentation. Proposals will always need to be written, there
will always be professional communicators (writers)

I'm thinking of getting into the field of technical writing, and am
currently taking an intro course. I'm wondering what is the health of
the industry? I've read a lot of stuff that declaims this is an ideal,
lucrative profession for someone with my skill set, and yet the other
day I read a column from this chap claiming that massive downsizing
continues to occur, work is hard to get, and many companies are hiring
cheap third-world tech writers. He was clear that he discourages anyone
from getting into this field.
I've noticed that on Monster, most jobs seem to ask for 6-10 years
experience.

I've read a lot of hype, but what is the real, on the ground experience
of those currently working in the field?

Nathaniel
