Ted,

There are many industries where certification and accreditation is of
immense benefit....  There are a number of folks on this list who are
seriously researching whether or not this would be of benefit to the
technical communications industry, and we have chosen to reserve judgment
until we have more information to consider. And most those discussing this
on the other list agree that certification should not be a barrier to entry
to the profession, but rather a mark of achievement.

By the way, lots of folks can't pass the MCSE, and it's money in the bank to
consultants and employees who can.... Which is one of the reasons the
program does so well for Microsoft. In many organizations (such as my
current employer), certification is becoming a criterion for promotion and
merit increases.  Whether that's right or wrong is another whole discussion,
but it is happening, more and more frequently.

I don't see the benefit.  A certification is only a piece of paper that says
you passed a test.  Anyone can do that.  Look at the Microsoft MCSE.
