Actually, I was just using "Document1" to underscore that I wanted this
to be a new document based on the template (on my system it would more
likely come up as Document17, but I'm figuring our users probably don't
have a bunch of Word docs open).

But thanks! <g>

I've been trying out the read-only approach, and on my XP machine it
lets me do File > Save and then hits me with an error message saying the
file is read-only. (Grrr. Word *knows* it's read-only, it's right up
there in the title bar, so why not just gray out the Save option and
force me to use Save As?)

I think I'm going to jettison the WinHelp idea and put plain old Word
docs on our web server, linking to them from an HTML page. That way,
they open in this weird IE-Word hybrid, but there's no danger of users
overwriting the original file.

So never mind, folks; I probably should've just gone with this approach
from the start. My thanks to Geoff and also those who responded off-list
with suggestions.

Christine
