Well, tables and figures are (or at least, are SUPPOSED to be) different
things that convey different (sometimes)information in different formats.
Why NOT make the distinction? And some people prefer to view tables (or
figures) when both present similar data; why smoosh them together in the TOC
to make it hard to find one or the other? To take this to an extreme, why
even specify that something is a table or figure at all...just make them
some kind of section headings within the text, and have an overall TOC that
lists everything in the document in the order in which it appears. That
doesn't seem like a very good idea, and failing to tell the reader which
entries are tables (containing text and numbers) and which are figures
(containing graphics) doesn't seem like a very good idea either.

However, if the editor of the book doesn't know the difference between a
table and a figure...well..

Hello,

Why do we distinguish between tables and figures in a document and number
each type of illustration separately? Why not just refer to tables and
figures as illustrations (or some other agreed upon label) and number them
consecutively?
