Anonymous has decided to change careers and move out of the technical writing field.

Why not just go in to your manager's office and let him/her know that you have decided to go back to school?

Explain that you want to make a smooth transition and ease into the educational routine by going to school part-time while you ease out of your present position by working part-time. Your manager is probably a reasonable, intelligent person who will be willing to work with you.

Be positive and sell the win-win benefits of your transition plan.
