You've probably been given some really good advice. From what I've read, the
mainframe segment of the technology field is expected to start losing its
experts at an alarming rate: all of those pony-tailed guru types are soon
going to be retiring. Where there's a shortage of supply and great demand,
salaries are bound to rise.
I work for a company that produces products for mainframe database users. I
have just now (finally!) found a web-based training curriculum that teaches
mainframe concepts and usage, and which is geared toward people who don't
already know a lot about mainframes. (Most of the doc out there assumes you
already know a lot, in my experience.) The web-based training is produced by
MindLeaders (http://www.mindleaders.com), and cost my company $250 for one
year for one person. It may sound like a lot to shell out if you're out of work
right now, but you get a *lot* of content for the price.
