Just out of grad school, I was a "contract" employee, working for a staffing
firm but assigned to FedEx. The position could have gone on for years had
the economy not gone sour.

In my time as a technical writer, I have met few others in this position.
Most are either self-employeed contractors or permanent employees. Most
staffing firms would put tech writers on their list, since they do get jobs
from time to time. But most of the time, the resume sits gathering dust,
even if the writer is proactively seeking a position.
