I have been writing columns for the LA Times lately and they pay about $60 a
column. Since I am working towards a syndicated column nationally in a few
years, I have been looking into these things.

I understand that payment varies from $20 to $100 a column. Smaller papers
pay less. A name gets paid more. I don't have a name yet. Yet.

For an example of what I am doing, see

Good luck!

I'm going to be pitching a weekly column to a local, small town newspaper,
but I have no idea what is reasonable compensation. I've written columns
before but within the framework of full time job, not as an independent
freelancer.
Any suggestions as to what kind of price tag I should place on a freelance,
weekly submission that is public service oriented? In addition to the
writing time involve, the column would require time spent in research and
interviewing "authorities". Is there such a thing as pitching it to other
small-town newspapers as well, thus reducing the "fee" by spreading it
around?
Does anybody out there have any experience with weekly newspaper columns?
