Yep. Good writers don't have a lot of problem finding a new job -- it just takes a little longer now.

These may be comforting thoughts, but the writers who thrive on the free market aren't necessarily the best writers - they're the ones who can promote themselves best. True, having some experience and knowledge of your ability may give you the confidence to market yourself more effectively, or give you some useful references to market yourself. However, there are certainly some very capable writers - and capable people in any field, for that matter - who are unemployed because they are too diffident to market themselves.

Or, to put it another way: networking is well-recognized as the most effective way to find a job. Somebody who is good at networking (which is really a type of marketing) gets a job because of who they know, and not primarily because of their abilities.

If certification existed, it would be another another form of marketing. So, having faith in the free market (which doesn't exist, and hasn't, for about 150 years, but that's another story) is besides the point.
