TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've used VSS, CVS, and StarTeam. Always because the programmers were
using it for their code and I was contributing my Help systems. I've
never used these tools to share documents across a company. All of the
discussion so far about binaries is the reason why.
I think you need a Knowledge Management system. I've used SharePoint on
a corporate intranet and I think it's a fine tool. The main benefit
(IMHO) of a KM system is that users do not have to "understand" someone
else's file hierarchy and naming conventions. Do a Search and bingo!
Good luck!
