Re: Levels of Edit: how are they defined/applied by technical editors?

"standard in the typical editing environment? (Is it actually used by 
technical editors?) If not, how do you (editors) define/determine 'levels 
of edit'?"

I find the levels of edit most useful when negotiating with clients, 
because what they mean by "copy edit" or "light edit" or any other term is 
usually not what I mean by that term. To try to avoid (often costly) 
misundertandings, I show clients a list of specific tasks and ask which of 
those tasks they want me to do.

I have a lot more about classifying editing (among other topics) on my

technical editing" and "How to." By the way, I agree with Geoff Hart's 
"heretical" editing priorities.
