That whole process is a joke in and of itself.
Whether it's done well or badly doesn't really matter for my point. I'm not talking about bogus "life experience" degrees," but, even so, I'm sure mileage varies.

But what matters is that, when there's a perceived need to translate experience into credentials, people don't hesitate to try. If certification was considered a goal worth trying, the necessary mechanisms would be created. Probably, too, the mechanisms would satisfy most people who used them.
