TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
We used to use it here for Word and Framemaker files. It is a workable solution, but slower than molasses in January, especially if you're not on-site.
There's another solution (the name of which escapes me) that is, from what I've heard, much faster.
Have any of you used MS Visual SourceSafe for document version control? Do you recommend it? Any problems?
What other programs do you recommend for storage and distribution of
documentation files?
One of our purposes is to let anyone in the company go to a central place --
a version control system -- and get a read-only copy of the latest
documentation. Is a company-wide license required just for Read access?
I found some VSS comments in the archives from 1999-2002, but thought I'd
check back and see what else people are using these days, since VSS is
expensive.
