TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Seems to me that at least part of the medical profession was included in
Robert's original post, in his remark about surgeons and
certification/licensing/professionalization. John's point that these are
not completely synonymous terms begs the question of the relationship
between them, which historically has been very close -- and at least in
this country was first and most effectively promoted by the medical
profession, beginning in the 19th century.
The passion for "professionalization" seems to afflict an increasing
number of jobs and work types. While it may bring certain benefits,
Robert offers a most compelling, if extreme, example of its destructive
side. Part of the original appeal for me of both technical writing and
software development was the possibility of doing work that was about
getting the job done (and done right), rather than about credentializing
first. Just goes to show how naive I was . . .
sadder but wiser,
Jennifer
