John,
A comment from one of the "gnomes" who is not a cellar dweller but who works on the top floor (another place archivists/record managers also live---we're everywhere!) The "to certify or not to certify" argument is not only alive and well on the TW list (as it has been on and off since I joined this list, on and off, in 1995) but is the same argument in many other professions. Record Managers have worked together to hammer out standards for their profession - but not all RM are certified. The same holds true for archivists, who can actually sport the title, CA, certified archivist. Both the archivists list and the records management list hold this same argument at least once a year with virtually the same stated reasons for holding one's opinion as those posted here.

What holds true for both RM and CA designations is the perception of those who hire. Employers who are not part of the field tend to perceive those with RM or CA after their names have gone through more rigorous testing than those who do not have these initials. Whether or not you personally think certification for your profession is good or bad, what becomes clear is that certain employers think certification matters.

Just my two cents.....from one of the bats in the belfry who has never sent records to the great mountain of iron!

Alan...take a look at the following link. It is for certification to be a
certified records manager. You know, those little gnomes who live in the
basement of your building, retrieving files for you and sending boxes to a
mountain made of iron. Shoot...how hard can THAT be.
