TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
> Personal reasons aside, the main reasons why I dislike to the STC are:
I am 100% in agreement with Bruce. I'd add two of my own reasons:
- There is zero (or minimal) effort within STC to encourage writers to be more
scientific or technically oriented. Nobody is asking STC to start teaching C++
or biology courses, but they could certainly encourage members to focus on tech
issues through sponsorship of technical seminars or industry-specific SIGs.
STC has a SIG (special interest group) for managers, single-sourcing, and just
about every other "communication" oriented minutia, but I have never seen a
"medical writers SIG" or "software writers SIG?"
- Nepotism and favoritism. Local chapters are often dominated by a handful of
power brokers who routinely use the resources of STC and their position as a
form of subsidized marketing for their personal tech writing companies or
placement agencies. Why on earth should I pay $110 a year, so that some local
tech writer placement agency can sell me on their services. Its like paying a
used car dealer to push you into buying a car. Moreover, the power brokers in
authority are very clear about maintaining that authority. They dole out favors
and perks to their pals and co-workers. For example, pals of the president
never seem to have trouble getting into seminars and meetings for free. But
competitors of the president's placement agency will pay FULL price - always!
