TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
What's wrong with having X number of those in the field qualify as
professional, and also being certified. Don't forget...being certified is
not something that everyone can or might want to attain. Being certified
shows that you ARE a cut above the ones who aren't...that you DO have a
higher level of training. Not being certified doesn't prevent you from being
in the field, just gives those who want to hired a certain level of writer
something to ask for.

I happen to believe that if this work is to be done right, the definition of
Professional fits just fine.

Well no, not until you tell me. ;-)
But the question here is a perfectly plain and simple one. Here are
definitions of the terms from Onelook.
Occupation: the principal activity in your life that you do to earn money
Profession: any type of work which needs special training or a particular
skill, often one which is respected because it involves a high level of
education
