Subject:Re: Draft then Tag, or Tag while Drafting? From:Peter Gold <peter -at- highsoft -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Mon, 7 Apr 2003 16:06:47 -0500
I'd like to correct the information in several responses about
tagging in FrameMaker's structured authoring environments (either
FM+SGML 5.x, 6.7, or structured interface in FM7). It's not as rigid
as described.
Regardless of the structure definitions in the EDD (Element
Definition Document, FM's counterpart to an SGML or XML Document Type
Definition, or DTD), it's possible to change the behavior of the
element catalog so that you can work as you prefer.
Use Element > Set Available Elements > All Elements to show all
elements in the element catalog, whether valid at the current
insertion point location, or not. You can tag as you prefer, such as
heading after heading after heading, even if this is not valid.
Later, you can fill in the child elements required for both your
thought structure and correct element structure.
You can even tag one paragraph-level element and press Enter/Return
for each subsequent paragraph you need, as your thoughts flow, then
reset the Element > Set Available Elements feature to display only
valid elements, to guide you to proper retagging later.
Regards,
Peter Gold

I am new to drafting structured documents. Do those of you who draft
structured documents prefer to draft the document unstructured and then
go back and tag it, or do you prefer to insert the tags as you go?
So far I've found that thinking about tagging really interferes with my
creative concentration for the drafting process.
