Given that you can really write yourself into a corner if you don't write with structure rules on, I recommend that you learn to live with the inconvenience. You'll find that it goes away after a while.

I've found that some applications are better for this process than others. Structured authoring in Frame is pretty easy. In XMetaL, it's a little more cumbersome. Epic is a bit more sluggish than XMetaL. XMLSpy is downright hostile for writers, if you have a complex document structure.
