TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Well after 6 months looking for anything in the Seattle area I took a
position so eerily similar to this one you wouldn't believe it. After 6
months of paper shuffling, bad* word processing and bad* DTP, I was almost
relieved yesterday when I was informed that they were ending the contract so
they could hire more (but cheaper) temps.
It paid the rent for a while, but it sure wasn't much fun. It's the GMP
environment that really was most abrasive. I thought working within FDA
regulatory requirements was difficult, but I found this much more
constraining. I guess the main problem is that the emphasis here is just on
getting the documents through the system. I do feel that I was able to make
a few contributions though. On a few occasions I was able to work with an
author and help them improve the quality of their documentation.
It's sure not the Technical Writer position I always dreamed about, but like
I said it paid (substantially) more than UI. Now I can look forward to
hitting the networking trail again. Hope it's not another six months
again:)

* "bad" in the sense of Leonard Pimpf Carnell's series of bad ballet, bad
opera, etc.
