Okay, buoys and gulls, we've all had our fun now. But, being serious for a moment, has it occurred to you that everyone has to start somewhere. No, I don't mean the poor schnook who takes the job; I mean the company that placed the ad.

Those of you who went from high school to college to a nice clean office job in a software company may not realize it; but there are a lot of small, old technology manufacturing and service companies where Windows 3.1 is considered up-to-date technology and the notion that there are people who consider themselves professional tech writers (at the kinds of salaries many of us make) sounds about as ludicrous as booking a flight to Mars for next year's vacation.

Let's give these folks credit for coming to the conclusion that they need _some_ kind of documentation. In whatever industry they're in, maybe they're the most progressive company out there. I mean how much doc comes with four-ought steel wool, right? Or replacement brake pads?

There is more in heaven and earth, Horatio, than software!
