John's right, of course...to an extent. In the past 13 years I've moved from Richmond to Raleigh to Petersburg to Chicago to Durham to Hamburg (Germany) to Richmond, almost always because of work prospects. One does get tired, and one does like the sense of building some permanence and "home" at some point. Interestingly, I have made myself available for travel--I've been willing to go anywhere for almost any length of time, but the companies would rather hire locally (and thus cheaper) than to offer me a contract. So I guess my comment on the state of the contracting world is that fewer companies offer geographic-immaterial contracts. Seeing my address in Richmond makes them feel, "Well, he's from out of town--too expensive, because he'll have to get enough to cover expenses."
So the "MOVE!" quotation is both humorous and, unfortunately, not helpful. Bit of a Hobson's choice, isn't it? I do think it's a funny quotation--was it DM or maybe Sam Kinison? Hmmm...
thanks,
joe
