With Acrobat (I think I've seen it done on 5.0), you can run the cataloging function, which then allows you to search over a database of linked files. Then the user would enter a keyword and be presented with a list of PDFs which contain that word.
The keywords are automatically compiled by the cataloging function - when you have more abstracts to add to the collection, you would have to run the function again over the entire collection.
I've had a bit of experience with some very bodgy freeware search engines - generally you have to enter the keywords yourself into the database, and maintain it manually. Oh, and actually spruce up the code yourself, to make it work more nicely. I haven't had the budget to actually *buy* one!
