Rajni,
What you're describing is probably most efficiently accomplished in the
process of building the database itself, not in the pdf file. Either way,
it's labor-intensive.
When building the database, an editor would identify n searchable terms for
each abstract (the value of "n" depending on how many terms and synonyms you
want to provide). The person building the database includes these searchable
fields in the structure. Then it's a matter of your user using the database
query mechanism or interface to search on those terms.
If you were to do this through pdf, as you propose, you would need access to
the source file of each abstract so you could build an index of that
abstract. When you regenerate the pdf, you would have it generate bookmarks.
Then you can combine the bookmark icons of the indexes of all the abstracts
into one new, searchable pdf document. This approach has nightmare
potential, however.
Seriously, I would recommend the database approach. It is easier to maintain
and expand, and it lets the computer do the bulk of the work.
HTH,
Marguerite
