Then you're learning from the wrong guy. My first tech writing mentor and business partner, Neil Churgin, was completely honest with all of our clients, yet he was extremely successful at landing jobs. Neil doesn't just give the *impression* of being intelligent, personable, flexible, and quick to learn new technologies -- he really *is* all of those things. When we talk about "people skills," we don't mean the ability to fool people, but rather the ability to listen to them and respond in an encouraging and articulate manner.
