Seems like it would have been even CHEAPER to just leave them as they were,
factoring in techs' time fiddling around with the drivers and the software.
Not to mention users' annoyance when trying to move a file around that's
bigger than 1.44M and not being able to get it on a floppy.

However, I have no issue with buying in bulk to effect savings; the issue
for me is that millions of people use Word, revision after revision, not
because they have evaluated the alternatives (the few that remain) and
decided that it is the proper tool for them, but because it's what they're
told to use. And the people who decide "let's buy 7500 new computers
bundled with Word" are few and far between, and are frequently
underqualified to decide whether Word is better than, worse than, or the
same as Open Office, which is free. And then those 7500 users use Word,
revision after revision, whether they want to or not.

I once had such a person (the 1 in 7500 decision-maker) tell me in an SOP
meeting that Times New Roman should be the font used in all documents
because it's the default in the normal.dot template, and figuring out how to
change it was too complicated. Feh.
