John,

I've got a print shop and a bunch of writers. We use Frame for making PDFs.

We end up making a separate PDF for the 8.5X11 and the 11X17 and we have the
print production folks put them back together. The printers (DocuTech) don't
like mixed sizes. This entails having a fake sheet in the 8.5X11 PDF to keep
pagination correct and to make it easier for the production staff to
determine which pages go where when they replace them. We use engineering
folds (tri-fold) on the 11X17s when they are Ring binder bound or clean room
bound, but it is problematic for perfect binding because we typically cut
the edges of perfect bound manuals to trim them. This sometimes cuts the
folds unless they are well inside the margins.

Hint: Because of the folds, we've chosen to print single sided on the 11X17
inserts to avoid the toner falling off both sides of the folds.

We also produce some manuals (schematic books with exploded view drawings)
that are entirely 11X17. There are no issues there about duplexing if you've
got the right printers.

Hi, guys...I received many constructive comments. The reason I want to do
this is summed in above snip of response...Frame's ability to intermix 11X17
and 8-1/2X11 sucks. If there was a way of intermixing sizes and having the
printer select the right tray, I'd happily mix the two...I have a set of
books where I do just that for about 30 diagrams. In that case, I do just as
Sam describes...fold the oversize. For those books, they don't stick out as
I've manually noticed the extended part of the page so when folded over, the
notch nestles over the binder rings. (I know, a little anal, but it's my
work)

However, that situation, I'm able to group the oversize pages in their own
chapter...in this case, the oversize are intermixed in every chapter. I'd go
nuts collating the oversize into the normal size.
